Why Anime? The Phenomenon Taking Over the World

Anime, as a genre, has captured the hearts of millions, becoming a global phenomenon. As of 2021, 36% (or 2.88 billion) of viewers worldwide enjoyed watching anime (Ampere Analysis). With international sales surpassing Japan’s for the first time in history, it’s time to explore what makes anime so captivating.

Anime is the 3rd most in-demand subgenre worldwide, with a 5.5% demand share (Parrot Analytics 1). Over 100 million households globally had watched at least one anime title on Netflix in 2020, marking a 50% increase from the previous year (Netflix). In America, around 30% of adults have a favorable impression of anime (MorningConsult). Meanwhile, in Japan, 33% of the population often watch anime or read manga, with almost 90% of young Japanese saying they watch anime (Statista 1).

The most popular anime of all time is Detective Conan, followed by classics like Dragon Ball and newer hits like Demon Slayer (2021 Japan Survey). The anime industry reached a staggering 2.4 trillion yen ($22.5 billion) in 2020 (The Association of Japanese Animations), and it’s estimated that the global anime market size will hit US$48.3 billion by 2030 (PrecedenceResearch).

So why does anime resonate with so many people? Anime offers a diverse range of genres, artistic styles, and storytelling techniques that appeal to different audiences. From action-packed adventures to heartwarming stories, anime covers a vast array of themes and emotions, allowing viewers to escape into imaginative worlds and form deep connections with characters.

It’s clear that anime is here to stay, and with its ever-increasing popularity, there’s no better time to dive into this incredible art form.
